More and more people today are looking towards getting healthier so it is no surprise that baby boomers are also jumping on the get healthy band wagon. One of the most popular forms of exercise amongst the baby boomers seems to be swimming. This is one of the least strenuous forms of exercise and you can get in a full workout with out over working your body.

Most people do not realize all of the benefits that can be obtained from swimming. Swimming and water exercise is the second best form of exercise that has the lowest rate for injuries. Walking is still the leader in that aspect for low injury rates. There is a great deal of doctors that will recommend that you do water exercises so that you can strengthen your muscles without harming your recovery. Swimming is great physical therapy for people of all ages no matter what their current physical condition is.

Swimming allows for a full body workout without causing strain while it works almost all of the body's major muscle groups so baby boomers choose this form of exercise more often. You can use the water as strength training or for aerobics since it is a great form of resistance. Water fitness works well for people at any fitness level so baby boomers love it. Not only can it make you more flexible it can help you to strengthen the muscle as well.

Swimming gives nearly all of the same effects as running does but many do not know this. When you run or do weight training you are putting a strain on the connective tissues. Swimming does not place a strain on these tissues. The amount of injury is so low that exercise can be done more often when done in the water. More can be done in the water because of the fact that the movements are twelve times greater and the body weight is reduced by almost ninety percent.

So, if you are a baby boomer who wants to try swimming to stay fit, you could take up swimming as a sport - an exer-sport! It will be effective - fulfilling your requirement for exercise and keep you active and feeling good about yourself. Being a low impact workout it will be quite safe. All you need to do is first and foremost; check with your doctor which water exercise is good for you. Then find out in the local recreational facility what types of swimming activities they offer. In many places, there are specific classes for different age and fitness levels. You can join them. After all good company would give that added incentive to be regular. Besides, a guided training will be better so that there is no fear of over-straining yourself in the enthusiasm!

Swimming as exercise for baby boomers is a popular pastime as more and more baby boomers near and enter the retirement phase of their lives.
