Ongoing foot stress may result in the loss of natural support for an individual's arches. Long term wearing of high heels affects the Achilles tendon and changes the mechanics of the ankle. Since the posterior tibial tendon is forced to compensate it breaks down allowing arches to fall.

While one might expect pain in the arches to be a symptom of a problem with this part of the body the pain does not just stop there. Many who suffer this problem also experience pain and fatigue in the heel, knee, leg and even in the lower back. Providing correct support for the arches can reduce many of these symptoms.

Heredity is something that one is unable to change; however, there are things that may prevent more pain. Select shoes that provide the necessary support for the feet. In addition, avoid overworking the foot by standing or walking for long periods. Avoid high heels when required to stand for extended periods. If overweight, losing a few pounds can help to reduce the stress one experiences in the foot, ankle or knee.

Pain is often the result of a lack of support. In addition to taking steps to provide support for the structure of the foot, sufferers may want to speak with a doctor about the pain. He or she can make recommendations that may be helpful.
